Off Campus Access
Using SSH
To improve security, telnet is no longer permitted to connect to department machines.
To access department machines from off campus, use ssh (think secure telnet).
We suggest using Putty for windows users. A useful feature of Putty, is that avaliable as stand-alone executable which can be run from a flash drive, ideal for traveling. For Linux or MacOS X users, you have ssh already installed.
There are several machines that allow off campus access:
- math.unl.edu
If these machines are un-reachable, something not good has happened to either the campus network or with the machines themselves.
Using Remote Desktop
For faculty and staff we have enabled Remote Desktop under Windows.
To use remote desktop, you will first need to know the name of your office machine, which is printed on a label on your machine. It will typically be math-XXX the unl.edu is assumed.
Also your office machine must be turned on and booted in to Windows.
On your remote machine Windows machine to Start→Programs→Accessories and select Remote Desktop Connection
If you have a Mac you can download the Remote Desktop program from Microsoft. Under Linux, you typically will have a program called rdesktop that allows you to connect to a remote windows machine.
You will then be prompted for a machine to connect to, typically math-XXX.unl.edu
After making the initial connection to your machine you will be prompted with a login screen just as if you were sitting in front of your machine on campus.
You do not need to be logged in to your office machine to connect to it remotely.
