Basic Setup

For those of you who just need a reminder on the servers and basic info:

Incoming Mail

  • Email: your-login-name@math.unl.edu
  • Incoming IMAP server: mathstat.unl.edu
  • IMAP server directory: Mail/

Outgoing Mail

  • Outgoing SMTP server: smtp.unl.edu
  • Encryption type: StartTLS
  • Port: 587
  • use Blackboard credentials (username/password)

Thunderbird

On first run: Don't import any settings.

It will prompt you to make a new account, don't do this at this stage. Press Cancel

Goto Tools->Account Settings (Windows)
or Goto Edit->Account Settings (Linux)

  1. Click on Add Account -> Email account.
    1. Next you will enter your real name and email address.
    2. Your email address is of the form your-login-name@math.unl.edu
  2. Server Info: Select IMAP for the server type. For the incoming and outgoing servers type mathstat.unl.edu
  3. Username: this needs to be your login name
  4. Account Name: Call it whatever you want, eg Math
  5. Now under the account you just created, select the Server Setting options, under Advanced Set the IMAP mail directory to be Mail/

When checking you mail for the first time:

  • It will ask for a password, use the password you used to logon to the machine.

Junk Mail Controls

In Account Settings (Edit/Tools -> Account Settings), under your mail account (e.g. mathstat.unl.edu), select "Junk Settings", and edit to taste. In particular, check the option Enable adaptive junk mail controls for this account.
